I love Mexican flavours. 2024 was all about breakfast burritos for me and I've been through my fair share of salsas. I do like a classic tomato salsa, but I specifically started getting into salsa verde - a savoury condiment with a base of tomatillos.
What are tomatillos?
They're not super common in the UK, and believe me it's been a bit of a pain to source them for this product, but they look like a mix of green tomatoes and physalis (also called groundcherries).
They don't taste like either really. They are delicious though and when cooked, they turn into this satisfying texture.
You can find a plethora of Mexican green salsas with tomatillos, onion, vinegar and some spices. And they are good, don't get me wrong.
However as per usual, we wanted to add a little something something. At first we wanted to add kiwi. We tried it and the taste was good, but a bit too overpowering. We then thought of melon, mango and even pear but in the end, settled for pineapple as it was the perfect blend of tangy and sweet. It compliments all the other flavours.
The result is a savoury, tangy and slightly sweet salsa verde that's perfect in burritos, on quesadillas, in tacos and anywhere else you'd use salsa. Dip your crisps in it.
