Everything Bagel Seasoning, Everything But The Bagel Seasoning, Bagel Seasoning.
Have you heard of this before?
I hadn’t until recently. We don’t really have ‘Everything Bagels’ here in the UK so much, but they’re an amalgamation of all common bagel flavours in one: sesame, poppy seeds, garlic, onion and salt. It’s a simple idea, really – make a seasoning that tastes like the bagel, just without the bagel part.
How many times can one say bagel in one blog entry?
Anyway – once I got the concept, and saw people using it on their food on Instagram and TikTok, I immediately wanted to try it, but to my disappointment it’s hard to come by over here and no supermarket seems to sell it.
You can get the American versions on Amazon but you easily pay £15 or more for a little thing of it, so I did some research and decided to just make my own.
Not to be dramatic, but it was a bit of a revelation.
I ended up tweaking the recipes I had seen online quite a bit as I felt they were very salty and I also opted for dehydrated garlic and onion rather than powders or granules. The result became a firm fixture in my spice cupboard for a few weeks and I used it pretty much every day – avocado toast, eggs, cream cheese, even some salads and sushi, it goes on so many things.
One day I put my little DIY jar of it on Condimaniac’s Instagram Story, asking if we should start selling this? And immediately got a few responses that we should.
It then took another few weeks before we finalised the two recipes, chose the names, got our label designs sorted, chose the spice jars, ordered the labels and so on, but on October 2nd, we launched The Good Bagel, our version of classic Everything Bagel seasoning and also, The Bad Bagel, which has some added Ghost Pepper (Bhut Jolokia) for a proper kick.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but I put a post on TikTok about it – we had about six followers at the time. I didn’t think much about it but about an hour later orders started flying in, TRULY flying in.
It took me a while to realise they were coming from TikTok but once I checked, I realised my little post on there had gone mini-viral. It was nearly 11pm by then but I decided to reply to some comments and one of those replies went even more viral, resulting in us getting well over 150 orders that weekend for our bagel seasonings.
It’s now nearly two weeks later and we’ve shipped around 500 of these little seasonings – most to the UK, but also to Germany, Ireland, Finland and even Australia!
I had a small inkling that there was a non-American bagel seasoning missing in the market, but I did not expect this… We’ve since put them on Amazon and it has been pretty mad on there, too.
We’re obviously over the moon and love seeing everyone receiving theirs and trying it and enjoying it but it has also come with some challenges for a small business like us, keeping up with demand. I think it’s already taught us a lot and equipped us for the future.
If you’d like to try The Good Bagel or The Bad Bagel or both – head to our shop or you can also find them on Amazon... and probably in more places soon if we can ever keep enough stock to give to any retailers!
